Khamzat Chimaev Could Cause Chaos If He Becomes UFC Champion
Ohana Magazine – UFC analyst Din Thomas beMMA analyst Din Thomas believes Khamzat Chimaev could create instability in the UFC middleweight division if he becomes champion. According to Thomas, Chimaev’s track record raises concerns about his consistency and commitment to regular competition.
Din Thomas Raises Red Flags
Speaking to MMA Junkie, Din Thomas explained that Chimaev’s unpredictability could become a liability for the UFC.
“If Khamzat wins, it’s a disaster. You can’t deny the possibility that this fight [vs. Dricus Du Plessis] might not happen,” Thomas said.
He emphasized that Chimaev is one of those fighters who complicates fight scheduling due to his uncertain behavior and history of pulling out.
“If he wins and becomes champion, can we truly expect him to show up consistently? That’s the real issue here.”
Health History Clouds Chimaev’s Reliability
Chimaev’s bout with COVID-19 significantly affected his health, leading him to cancel multiple fights. At one point, he even hinted at retirement before returning to action. This history has made UFC observers skeptical about his ability to sustain a regular fighting schedule.
Thomas highlighted this issue:
“Can he fight two, three times as champion? A division can’t stand still. A titleholder has to keep the division moving.”
Brilliant Fighter, But Risky Champion
Despite his health concerns, Chimaev’s talent is undeniable. He gained attention early in his career by fighting three times within 66 days in 2020. His performances were dominant and sparked immense hype.
Since then, however, his activity has slowed. From 2023 onwards, he has only competed once a year. Nonetheless, his resume includes victories over elite fighters like Gilbert Burns, Kevin Holland, Kamaru Usman, and Robert Whittaker.
These accomplishments prove Chimaev’s potential. But for him to lead a division, the UFC—and its fans—need more than flashes of brilliance. They need dependability.
