South Korea Alarmed: North Korea Nearing Nuclear Missiles That Could Reach the US

Ohana Magazine President Lee Jae Myung of South Korea voiced deep concern over North Korea’s missile program. He stated that Pyongyang’s intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) project is now in its final phase. Despite strict sanctions, North Korea continues to push forward. According to Lee, the regime seeks stronger bargaining power with Washington in future denuclearization talks.

The Final Stage of North Korea’s ICBM Development

Lee explained that the program has not yet reached full success but is “only a few steps away.” He warned that Pyongyang is close to perfecting the technology to deliver nuclear warheads across continents. Such progress would allow missiles to reach the United States. This, he stressed, shows North Korea’s determination to secure its rule with nuclear deterrence.

The Growing Nuclear Stockpile

Lee estimated that North Korea produces enough fissile material each year to build 15 to 20 nuclear bombs. If this continues, the arsenal will expand rapidly. Both the number of warheads and the sophistication of missiles would grow. He cautioned that such development threatens stability across the region and beyond.

A Different Policy Approach from Previous Leaders

Since taking office, Lee has pledged a new approach to Pyongyang. Unlike his predecessors, he aims to freeze North Korea’s nuclear program instead of escalating tensions. He argued that halting nuclear production would bring major security benefits. This step, he said, could reduce risks in Northeast Asia and reassure the global community.

Kim Jong Un’s Response and Global Implications

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has shown no interest in dialogue with Seoul. Instead, he has tightened defense ties with Russia and dismissed denuclearization. Recently, Kim hinted at talks with Washington. However, he added that any deal must allow continued nuclear development. This condition highlights his strategy to gain recognition as a nuclear state.

Strategic Risks for the Region

Experts warn that North Korea’s progress increases risks for both Asia and the US. The growing partnership with Russia gives Pyongyang more confidence to defy sanctions. South Korea, the US, and Japan may feel pressured to strengthen their defense systems. Lee’s warnings highlight the urgent need for global action before North Korea crosses a dangerous line.
