Windows Usage Declines Since 2022

On June 24, 2025, Microsoft revealed that over one billion devices were actively using Windows. The announcement came through a blog post by Yusuf Mehdi, Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer for the company.

At first, this number looked impressive. However, data from Microsoft’s 2022 annual report told a different story. Back then, the number of Windows users exceeded 1.4 billion. The significant difference raised concerns about a possible user decline.

Microsoft Revises Its Statement

Shortly after media outlets like ZDNet questioned the data, Microsoft updated its blog post. The company clarified that the “one billion” figure was only an estimate. It later corrected the number to “more than 1.4 billion,” matching the 2022 figure.

Microsoft claimed the initial figure was not inaccurate but lacked precision. Even so, the correction did little to stop speculation about a shrinking user base.

Why Are Users Leaving Windows?

A shift in consumer habits may explain this trend. Many users now prefer smartphones and tablets for daily tasks. These devices are compact, powerful, and portable, making them ideal for modern lifestyles.

Only certain groups continue to rely on Windows PCs. These include gamers, software developers, and business professionals who need specific tools.

Windows 10 Support Ends in October 2025

Adding to the shift, Microsoft confirmed it will end support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. After that, the system will no longer receive updates or security patches. Users will need to switch to Windows 11 or consider other options.

In a statement, Microsoft reminded users:

“Support for Windows 10 ends on October 14, 2025. After this date, no further technical help or updates will be available.”

To help users transition, Microsoft offers an Extended Security Updates (ESU) program. This allows people to keep using Windows 10 until October 2026.

What This Means for Microsoft

The apparent loss of 400 million users highlights Microsoft’s changing role in the tech world. While it remains a key player, rising competition from mobile platforms has reduced its dominance.

Microsoft must now adapt. Focusing on cloud services, gaming, and AI might be the way forward. But to stay competitive, the company must also make Windows more appealing to the next generation of users.
