Trump Threatens Canada Over Palestine Recognition Amid Trade Deal Talks

Ohana Magazine – U.S. President Donald Trump lashed out at Canada’s decision to recognize Palestine, warning it could derail ongoing trade talks between the two nations.

Trump Expresses Anger on Truth Social

Trump didn’t hold back his criticism. “Wow, Canada just announced support for establishing a Palestinian state. That will make it very difficult for us to reach a Trade Deal with them. Oh Canada!!!” he wrote on Truth Social on Thursday, July 31.

Trump, a vocal supporter of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, reacted strongly as Western allies like France, the UK, and Canada lined up to support Palestine’s recognition.

Canada Pushes for a Two-State Solution

On Wednesday, July 30, Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed that Canada would support Palestine’s statehood during the upcoming UN General Assembly in September.

Carney emphasized that Canada continues to advocate for a peaceful two-state solution. “Canada believes in a sovereign and independent Palestine, existing alongside Israel in peace and security,” he stated during a press conference.

Western Allies Follow Suit

France and the United Kingdom also plan to recognize Palestine at the UN forum. Both countries hold permanent seats on the UN Security Council. According to Carney, Canada made its decision after the Palestinian Authority committed to significant governance reforms.

So far, Carney and his cabinet have not responded directly to Trump’s trade threats.

Trump Ties Recognition to Trade Talks

Canada and the U.S. remain locked in trade negotiations. Tensions escalated earlier this year following Trump’s renewed push for tariffs. He now threatens to slap a 35% tariff on Canadian goods not covered under the USMCA.

International Recognition of Palestine Gathers Momentum

The global movement to recognize Palestine has gained traction since Israel’s 2023 military campaign in Gaza. In 2024 alone, nine countries—including Spain, Ireland, Norway, Slovenia, and several Caribbean nations—formally recognized Palestine.

As of July 2025, at least 143 out of 193 UN member states had recognized or pledged support for Palestinian statehood.
