Contemporary Women: The Rising Concerns

Contemporary Women

Ohana Magazine – When we talk about contemporary women, it seems there’s no end to the discussion. From everyday topics to critical matters, everything gets scrutinized. Many people claim that women are beings created with softness and compassion. But what’s wrong with women wanting to improve the quality of their lives? With wanting to develop their abilities? With wanting their existence to be recognize? Or simply with wanting to enjoy life, which they consider harsh, in a way that feels right to them? And the answer is that it is perfectly valid for them to do so.

The Rise of the ‘Contemporary Woman’

The issue arise when these women desire to be seen as more than they are. This yearning for recognition is where many problems stem from. In today’s modern era, technology has almost become a god, worshiped by many. Whether we realize it or not, women are no longer bound by tradition or culture. Many of these women proudly identify as “contemporary women.”

These women are draw to materialistic things, often focus on a lifestyle that screams luxury. Their wardrobes are full of branded clothing, and they prioritize their own pleasure over others’ needs. These women, influenced by a hedonistic way of life, often neglect social sensitivity. They forget that they live in a society rich in cultural values, and that moral principles should be the foundation of life’s order. These contemporary women are enamored by instant gratification and opulence, often overlooking the fact that the very society and people around them are crucial factors in shaping their values. Unfortunately, this neglect leads them to ignore social empathy and continue indulging in their hedonistic behaviors.

Cultural and Moral Dissonance

However, from the viewpoint of contemporary women themselves, they argue that this lifestyle is their way of asserting their identity, claiming freedom, and seeking validation. These women have grown accustomed to the comforts and luxuries that the world offers. They believe that since life is short, they should seize every opportunity and enjoy the pleasures it brings. Yet, this mindset is problematic. They should be more cautious in their approach to life, as not everything that is available is necessarily good or healthy for them.

These women are often reluctant to step outside their comfort zones, unwilling to engage with the “messy” aspects of life. They prefer cleanliness, comfort, and convenience—unaware that they are becoming overly reliant on material things, such as smartphones. These gadgets have become so essential to their lives that a mere moment of forgetfulness can cause panic. They forget that life’s true essence lies in the experience and relationships.

The Influence of Western Culture

Western culture has heavily influenced many individuals, especially in Indonesia. Contemporary women seem to have lost their sense of modesty and are often willing to sacrifice their values for temporary satisfaction. Issues such as casual sex, revealing clothing, and the lack of respect for older generations have become more common. Women are increasingly disrespecting themselves, wasting time and money on frivolous purchases, and neglecting their true worth. This diminishing moral compass should be a cause for concern for society at large, and especially for families, who should work to instill and preserve the values that have always been important.
