US Government Urges Apple and Google to Remove TikTok

Ohana Magazine – Leaders of the US House committee for China have urged Apple and Google to remove TikTok from their app stores. This request came from Republican Chairman John Moolenaar and Democratic Vice Chairman Raja Krishnamoorthi.

Court Ruling and Congressional Action

Last week, a US federal court upheld a law that requires ByteDance, a China-based company, to divest from TikTok’s US operations or face a complete ban. TikTok currently has about 170 million users in the US.

“Congress has acted decisively to protect US national security and safeguard TikTok users from the Chinese Communist Party,” wrote the legislators. They added that TikTok must promptly divest to meet these requirements.

No Official Responses Yet

Although Apple, Alphabet, and TikTok have not issued official responses yet, on Monday, ByteDance and TikTok took emergency measures to suspend the law while awaiting a review from the US Supreme Court.

The US Department of Justice stated that the ban on January 19 “will not directly prohibit TikTok use” for those who already downloaded the app. Nevertheless, the ban on technical support “will eventually make the app unusable.”

Impact on TikTok Users

Furthermore, TikTok users in the US have raised concerns. The app is popular for entertainment, content sharing, connecting with friends, and business promotion. Consequently, removing TikTok from app stores could disrupt these activities and leave millions without access.

TikTok’s Response

In response, TikTok warned that enforcing the rules will remove the app from stores on January 19. It “will not be available in most countries.” Moreover, stopping support services will “cripple the platform in the US and make it unusable.”

ByteDance and TikTok argue that the proposed ban is unjust. They have taken measures to address security concerns and have engaged in discussions with US authorities. However, the ongoing legal and political challenges threaten the app’s future in the US market.

Future of TikTok in the US

Ultimately, the fate of TikTok in the US remains uncertain. Users and stakeholders are closely watching developments. The outcome will impact TikTok and set a precedent for how foreign-owned tech companies are regulated in the US.

As the January 19 deadline approaches, attention is on the US Supreme Court and responses from Apple, Google, and TikTok. The decisions made in the coming weeks will shape the future of the app in the US market.
