Three Parties Affected by Ruben Amorim Appointment as Manchester United’s New Manager
Ohana Magazine – Portuguese coach Ruben Amorim has officially been appoint as Manchester United’s new manager, replacing Erik ten Hag. The Red Devils made the announcement public on Friday, November 1, 2024.
The decision to part ways with the Dutch tactician and bring in the 39-year-old Amorim came after a series of unsatisfactory results at the start of the 2024/2025 season. Under Ten Hag, Bruno Fernandes and his teammates struggled, leaving Manchester United in 14th place in the Premier League table and winless in the Europa League.
United’s management had initially deliberated on Ten Hag’s future during the October international break but opted to give the former Ajax manager another chance. However, the club’s patience wore thin after a Premier League defeat to West Ham on Sunday, October 27, 2024. Without delay, the club terminated their relationship with the coach who had previously delivered the Carabao Cup and FA Cup titles for the team.
Ruben Amorim appointment marks the sixth permanent managerial change for Manchester United since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013. Although Amorim has not yet arrived at Old Trafford due to serving out his notice period with Sporting CP, his appointment is already causing ripples that will impact several parties. Here are three of them:
1. Sporting CP
Sporting CP stands as the most directly affected by Amorim’s move to Manchester United. The Portuguese club has relied heavily on Amorim since he joined in 2020, during which time he guided them to numerous trophies.
Under Amorim’s leadership, Sporting won two Primeira Liga titles (2020/2021 and 2023/2024), two League Cups (2020/2021, 2021/2022), and the Portuguese Super Cup in the 2021/2022 season. His departure marks a significant loss for the club, which now faces the challenge of finding a suitable successor.
The only silver lining for Sporting CP is the compensation fee of 10 million euros that Manchester United will pay for Amorim’s transfer. While this sum may help cushion the blow, it does not fully compensate for the void left by the accomplished coach.
2. Marcus Rashford
According to reports from Football Transfers, Marcus Rashford could be another party impact by Ruben Amorim appointment. While Rashford possesses qualities that Amorim might value, the coach’s preferred formation could sideline the English forward.
Amorim is known for favoring a 3-4-3 system. In this setup, Bruno Fernandes and Alejandro Garnacho are seen as strong candidates to occupy the inside forward roles, potentially pushing Rashford to the bench. Such a tactical shift might limit Rashford’s playing time, raising questions about his future role at the club.
3. Matthijs de Ligt
One of the main reasons Matthijs de Ligt joined Manchester United in the summer transfer window of 2024 was the presence of Erik ten Hag, who had coached him during their successful time at Ajax. However, with Ten Hag now gone, de Ligt’s position as a starting center-back could be uncertain.
Rumors suggest that Amorim may consider bringing in Ousmane Diomande, a 20-year-old center-back who played under him at Sporting and is regard as one of Europe’s most promising defensive talents. Should this transfer materialize, de Ligt’s place in the starting lineup could be under threat.
Ruben Amorim’s arrival at Old Trafford is undoubtedly a significant development for Manchester United. However, it has already posed challenges for Sporting CP, Marcus Rashford, and Matthijs de Ligt, each of whom will face different repercussions from the managerial change.
